Fundamentals of Freehand Longarm Quilting
Quilt as desired?! lecture/trunk show – shorter version (1 hour plus)
The dreaded words – Quilt As Desired while not used as often, can still be found on many patterns and publications for quilters. Those of us quilting for others are often on-the-spot to come up with ideas and quilting plans as we meet with our clients. In other words, instantly.
In the Quilt as desired?! lecture/trunk show we will talk about the clues and messages that you can pick up from both the client and the quilt top to get you started choosing design. The style of the top, client preferences and budget all come into play. There is no one-perfect-way to quilt a particular top.
I will bring several finished quilts and talk about how and why I quilted them the way I did. And I encourage students to bring a top for which they would like to discuss design.
How Should I Quilt This? – Lecture/Trunk Show – 2 hours plus
For groups of 12 or more.
Ah, the age old question…usually posed after reading the ubiquitous “Quilt as desired.” at the end of pattern instructions.
I truly believe that the quilting is at the very least a full third of the overall design of the quilt. It deserves as much consideration as the fabric selection and pattern choice. There are thousands of quilting designs and no one perfect choice. Walking yourself through a series of questions helps narrow the field and lead you to the choices that are “perfect” for YOU!
In this presentation we will discuss design, density and batting, thread and backing choices. What is the end use of the quilt? How will it be cared for? What is the “feeling? of the quilt top? Formal? Playful? Vintage? and how your quilting design choices emphasize that feel.
I will bring a variety of quilts and discuss why I chose the types of quilting designs I did. And I encourage students to bring quilt tops to discuss design choices for at the end of the presentation. We will do as many quilt tops as time allows.
One Fell Swoop Quilts – Demo class covering the first three projects – 2 hour class
For groups of 8 or more.
One Fell Swoop quilts are quilts that are “pieced” and quilted at the same time on the longarm or home quilting system. These are fast, fun, simple quilts that can be done start to finish in a day including attaching the binding (you will hand turn or finish the binding on your regular sewing machine.) This method is an excellent way to produce charity quilts, drag around (toddler) quilts, tail-gate or stadium quilts…the list goes on…
This demo class covers the simple strippy quilt (finished seams), raw edge wavy strippy quilt, “piecing” simple shapes through attaching the binding all on the quilting system. I will also show and discuss further projects that expand on this method for your inspiration.
This is the very same info contained on the One Fell Swoop instructions page on this blog for the first three projects. Printed instructions will be provided; take notes, ask questions and have fun!
Private classes also available in my studio by appointment.

thanks…
Your quilting is fabulous. If possible, I would appreciate any recommendations you might have for someone who considering buying a long arm-resources, books, etc. I am buying a used set up and have only quilted on a DSM. Many thanks.
Diane, I highly recommend that you join an online forum such as Machine Quilter’s Resource or Longarm Chat…there is a fee to belong, but so much information and pictures for you to comb through. Both sites have info on books, videos, equipment. They are the best starting point. I belong to MQR and visit every day!.

Just found this blog and am anxious to follow it. I’ve been longarming for just 6 months on a used machine/frame to start with. I introduced myself to longarming by renting time on a Gammill with a Statler Stitcher. Nice. I couldn’t buy that setup so I bought a more affordable brand used from someone close by who never, ever used it. I got an 18,000 machine/frame for 11 so I’m excited. I still work full time and have just started quilting for some extra money for mission trips and eventual retirement. I’m quilting a few tops right now for Quilts Beyond Borders so that’s how I found this blog. I love it and look forward to all the good info I can glean from the professionals and give back to the international community at the same time.
Terrific, Cindy. I am so glad you are enjoying the process! Thanks for the lovely comments.

I have been looking at your online class at Annie’s. I have a Little Gracie frame and a Juki machine. I am wondering if the class would help me, or if the information is strictly for longarms. Thanks for the help!
Ruth…the class is for all quilting system users. From hobby systems like yours through full size longarm systems. It is a beginner, let’s get you quilting type of class. I developed it originally for hobby systems, but it was extended for the video.
I hope this answers your question.
Thanks so much1

I just ran across a quilt on Pinterest of a lone star quilt, I believe it was named Anna’s Star, it was in reds/black/white. I can’t find the pattern for it. Date was 2012/2013. I think the pattern may have been in a McCalls Quilting magazine, May/June 2012. Don’t know if that was for this quilt or just a post. I would love the pattern. Can you help?

Hi, I’m from California. I saw on Pinterest an adorable quilt that had teapots on it. Do you sell the pattern for that?
Thank you.

Hi, Peggy. I am afraid not. I am a longarm quilter. And that is a quilt that was brought to me by a client.

I’m interested in the “how shall I quilt this” class. Do you have a schedule?
Good morning, Ginger. I am not currently teaching classes due to covid. I will resume next year.
Thank you for your interest.
