The applique blocks in the quilt were part of a Quilt As You Go project, but after the blocks were done she put them away. Julie recently pulled the project back out and put it together into a quilt top; deciding not to QAYG to finish it.
I have received a few of these over the years. They can present a few problems. Since the blocks are already sandwiched and quilted they are of course sturdier and thicker than the sashing and any added pieced blocks. That can result in some fullness in the non-QAYG areas that need to be eased in.
In this quilt there are 12 applique blocks matched with patch work and sashing. I chose to quilt over the lines she quilted in the applique blocks so they would be attached to the backing. I also ditched around the applique and did some very light interior work because the pieces were quite large. Then I did my best to ease in the rest of the project with freehand quilting.
